Chemistry in the community has an experiment like this without the NaOH. They use 1 M zinc chloride with mossy zinc and boil the pennies for 5 to 10 minutes. Just did it today and worked on every penny. Pennies are cleaned with 1 M HCl prior to putting into zinc chloride solution. I assume you put the penny on the hot plate after plating to make brass?
