MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEACHER
Seventh-Eighth Grade
Overview of Position
The San Francisco School seeks a Middle School Math Teacher interested in
strengthening
mathematical reasoning and deepening conceptual understanding among seventh
and eighth
graders, while helping them develop sound skills and work habits. The
school is currently
working on a reorganization of the math curriculum and approach, and we
desire a teacher who
is interested in collaborating with co-workers and a consultant in the
evolution of an inquirybased
math program. The Middle School Math Teacher also works cooperatively as
part of the
Middle School team that has the overall responsibility for 96 students.
Teacher responsibilities
outside the classroom include serving as an advisor to ten students,
parent-teacher conferences,
student-teacher town meetings, camping and backpacking trips, teaching an
8-week elective class,
writing high school recommendations, and shared duties such as recess
supervision, chaperoning
dances and service learning projects. All teachers also come together on a
regular basis to examine
student work, discuss best teaching practices, and hone professional skills.
Qualifications sought
We seek a talented teacher who can inspire students. Candidates must have
strong
preparation in mathematics, have successful middle or high school teaching
experience, and
exhibit excellent communication skills. Cultural competence and the ability
to work
collaboratively are essential. Candidates should be student-centered,
practiced in
differentiated instruction, and skilled at honing student skills. A
teaching credential or a related
MA degree and three years of successful work as a teacher are recommended.
Overview of School
The San Francisco School is an independent school, pre-K through eighth
grade, with a
commitment to a multicultural and inclusive community. Suitably
characterized by one parent
as an "urban school with a village atmosphere," The School embraces San
Francisco's ethnic,
cultural, and economic diversity. Our progressive approach to education
encourages children
to develop self-reliance, solid academic skills, creativity, and a sense of
social justice. Students
learn to think like disciplinarians in a field, consider big and central
ideas, and are supported in
seeking and developing their own passions. They graduate academically
prepared, inquisitive,
courageous, and eager for the challenges ahead.
