Pinholers,
I was greatly saddened to read in yesterday's obits about the
passing of Dr. Philip Morrison. For years I have used two tapes of his
from the series, "Ring of Truth." One is "Energy" and the other "Atoms."
Several, ( likely more, Paul would know), years ago I was walking
around the Exploratorium during the break of a Saturday Alumni session,
or perhaps during one of the summer TI workshops, when there coming
towards me in his wheel chair was the the man himself! I got up the
courage to introduce myself and chat with him a bit. I told him how much
I enjoyed the series and that my favorite episode was "Energy" where he
came up with a new unit of energy, (JD = jelly donut), and discusses the
Tour de France. It was such a thrill to talk to him! He told me his
favorite episode - of his own series - was the one on "Mapping." I
admitted to him that I had had a hard time following it, but only had
seen it once, rather than several times like the other episodes. I still
kick myself for saying I didn't understand one of his videos, but
that's what I did. After our 5 minute conversation I was walking around
on a cloud, figuratively speaking. I couldn't wait to get home to tell
my wife because she knew how much I enjoyed the tapes and admired Dr.
Morrison. He was so nice, open, and engaging.
I think I had better go to the closet and find that "Mapping" tape
and watch it again. I will forever remember that day I actually got to
meet and speak to one of my heros, and I thank the Exploratorium for
making that possible.
