Special Workshop - with stipend - for Beginning Science Teachers:
The Spectroscope -
- the most important invention of the past two thousand years?
Spectroscopic analysis is an important tool for scientists. >From
astronomers probing the composition of the universe to material scientists
analyzing defective hard disk drives, spectroscopy plays a key role in
identifying substances, and often their absolute or relative quantities, in
an unknown material. The absorption or emission spectra of gaseous atoms
and molecules and of bulk materials reveals rich information about the
structure of atoms, molecules and bulk materials, respectively. The
workshop will include hands-on, inquiry-based activities suitable for middle
and especially high school science classes; print and URL resources will be
provided.
Instructor: Dr. Ray Trautman, Professor of Chemistry/Biochemistry, SFSU
When: Saturday, May 21, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Where: San Francisco State University, Thornton Hall
For: teachers in their first, second, or third year of teaching and
pre-service credential candidates.
Stipend: $50
Receive: classroom resources and activities based on the California Science
Education Standards (physical sciences - chemistry and physics)
To Apply:
E-mail Dr. Kathleen O'Sullivan, kaosul@sfsu.edu
