Dear Pinholers,
This summer, July 20 to Aug.20, 2005 I will be in Guatemala. I will
participate in a K-12 Teaching Field Experience in Antigua, Guatemala
offered by Dr, Parsons from San Jose State Univ.
If you know resources and opportunities that will help and enrich both the
teachers and the students Summer experience in Guatemala, please, share them
with us.
For example:
1. Does the Exploratorium have connections with a museum in Guatemala?, with
a university?
2. Have you visited Guatemala and have precious or useful advice to offer.
3. Are you an expert on Maya culture and generously want to offer
suggestions?
4. Are you an expert on ‘Science Across Cultures’ and have great lessons
about science/math of the Maya culture you are willing to share?
Finally, my husband will join me during the last week of my trip and we are
planning to visit Caribbean reefs. Once we reach the Caribbean part of
Guatemala should we head for Punta Gorda and the Sapodilla Cayes in Belize,
or should we better explore snorkeling/scuba possibilities nearby in
Honduras?
Thanks,
lucila

Pinholers,
A student asked me some questions related to surfing safety during an
electrical storm.

Is a surfer at risk on open water during an electrical storm?

Does lightning often strike open water?

Would a wetsuit offer any protection to the surfer if they were struck
by a lightning bolt? Or if lightning struck near them in the water?

Thanks,

Lou Morton

Hi Lou

Yes a surfer is at risk. Lightning striking nearby might not kill you
but it may knock you unconscious so that you drown.

Yes lightning often strikes open water.

The wetsuit would not help protect against a direct lightning strike.
(The voltage can easily vaporize the wetsuit and penetrate the
resulting space.)

It might help a little if you were completely covered against a distant
strike 100 m away or so but a dry suit would definitely help protect
you.
