Dear John,
Thanks for sharing this information. July 23 I will fly to Guatemala to
participate in a three-week teacher training program and I soon will review
the science and math info you are sharing with us.
Thanks again,
lucila

CIENTEC, a non-profit foundation in Costa Rica to promote science and math,
has
developed a great way to enhance science education. With funding from a
breakfast
cereal company (Jack's) they have developed a large number of cards that
are inserted
into the cereal boxes. Each card has a fun and informative science
experiment that kids
can do.

All of the cards are also available via their web site:
http://www.cientec.or.cr/
For an English translation, you can enter the URL into Alta Vista's
Babelfish site:
http://world.altavista.com/babelfish/tr

The translation isn't perfect, but it is clear enough to make the site
quite useful
for both Spanish- and English-speaking students.

Also, CIENTEC recently sponsored a teacher workshop on earthquakes and
volcanoes
that Eric Muller and I participated in. I've posted a PowerPoint talk and
many
photographs that may be helpful for those teaching Earth Science or
Geography. See:

Cheers,
John
