The Exploratorium Teacher Institute will present two FREE special half-day
workshops on the science behind the San Francisco Opera Doctor Atomic. These
workshops are designed for middle and high school teachers. Please use the
following link for workshop information and to register for these workshops:

http://centralpt.com/pageview.aspx?id=7760&site_id=128

Space is limited and registration is due by July 27, 2005. Teachers can sign
up for one or both workshops. The sessions will be held at the
Exploratorium, 3601 Lyon Street, San Francisco, CA 94123. Questions? Please
call Blake or Anna at (415) 561-0313.

NO STIPENDS WILL BE ISSUED FOR THESE SPECIAL WORKSHOPS.

An Operatic Explosion: Physics Behind the Bomb
Monday, August 1, 2005 from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Exploratorium
Instructors: Paul Doherty and Modesto Tamez

The first workshop will be about the physics behind the atom bomb. The
phenomena leading to the atom bomb fall in the category called nuclear
physics. We'll begin by visiting exhibits on the floor of the Exploratorium
such as the "Cloud Chamber" where we can see the tracks of sub-atomic
particles and "Radioactive Decay Model" where we will model nuclear decay
and study half life. Then we'll go to the classroom where we will do
experiments modeling the operation of a nuclear chain reaction with
ping-pong balls. The bomb converts mass to energy as described by the
equation E = mc2.

Dissecting Doctor Atomic: The Physics of Operatic Sound
Tuesday August 2, 2005 from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Exploratorium
Instructors: Paul Doherty and Modesto Tamez

The second workshop will be on the physics of operatic sound. We'll begin by
visiting exhibits in the Sound section of the Exploratorium such as "Vocal
Vowels" an exhibit that turns the sound of a duck call into the sound of an
understandable vowel, and the "Frequency Analyzer" which shows the
frequencies produced by a human voice. We'll use these exhibits to explore
the acoustics of the human voice and other sound producing instruments.
Then, we'll listen to the differences between operatically trained voices
and normal speaking voices.

Thanks,
Blake
