6th-8th Grade Teachers of Science

A Unique Opportunity for Professional Development is Here!

The Redwood City School District, in collaboration with the
Ravenswood City School District, has recently been awarded a
California Math/Science Partnership grant.

There is space available for teachers outside these districts to take
part in the science portion of the 2005 summer Mathematics and
Science Collaborative institutes. We invite you to take advantage of
the expertise provided through this grant.

The vision of the Math and Science Collaborative is to design and
implement initiatives to improve student achievement in 6th-8th grade
science, increase teacher's content knowledge based on the California
Science Content Standards, and provide new networking opportunities.

Local Partners presenting the professional development are from the
Geological Sciences Department at San Jose State University, the
Exploratorium, the San Mateo County Office of Education, and the K-12
Alliance.

Teachers will participate in challenging, engaging, inquiry-based
science experiences appropriate for their grade level content
standards (life, earth or physical).

August 3rd-4th: All 6th-8th grade teachers will meet at the San
Mateo County Office of Education
August 5th and 8th-11th: 6th grade will meet at SJSU, 7th- 8th will
meet at the Exploratorium
August 12th: All 6th-8th grade teachers will meet at the San Mateo
County Office of Education

3 Upper Division science course units are also available through
SJSU. Additionally, points earned for participation in professional
development activities may be applied toward HOUSSE certification.

Please join us in this effort to improve teaching and support student
achievement.
