Director, Science Exploration Camp

The Science Exploration Camp (SEC) is a non-profit corporation that
provides a summer science enrichment program primarily for children ages
7 to 11. SEC's goal is to provide a hands-on, interactive, and
collaborative environment in which children may explore and experience
different areas of scientific research. SEC is seeking an enthusiastic,
high energy director to lead this summer's camp. The camp will run from
July 21 to August 29 and will be based at the prestigious Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in Berkeley, California.
Camp enrollment will be 30 children per week. SEC is seeking a director
with the following qualifications: teaching experience with emphasis on
science and math, experience developing science curriculum for children
ages 7 to 11, experience working with the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS)
Great Expectations in Math and Science(GEMS) modules, experience
supervising assistant teachers and volunteers, CPR and First Aid
training. Previous experience running a summer science camp is desired,
but not required. The camp's director's primary responsibilities will be
to augment and/or develop age-appropriate curriculum for the six-week
camp and conduct morning science activities in collaboration with other
camp staff.

The curriculum will be based on weekly sciences themes, which will
incorporate presentations and demonstrations by Berkeley Lab researchers
and staff. The director will interact with researchers in their labs to
develop activities that are appropriate for the campers. Presentations
and demonstrations will include such topics as: electron microscopy
research at the Center for Electron Microscopy; computing sciences
technology such as the virtual reality; and using soft x-rays for surface
analysis at the Advanced Light Source. The director will be paid for time
spent developing the camp's curriculum in advance of the camp's opening
on July 21. While the camp is operating (July 21-August 29), the
director's posiion will be part-time, approximately 20 to 24 hours per
week. To accommodate possible scheduling conflicts for professional
teachers, the final week time commitment is flexible.

Salary range: $17-$22/hour.
