Subject: Identifying Promising and Exemplary Programs

The U.S. Department of Education seeks San Francisco Bay Area science
educators (teachers, administrators, scientists) to help identify promising
and exemplary science materials and programs.
Reply-To: rcarlos@wested.org (Roberto Carlos)

BACKGROUND
Congress has directed the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate
educational programs and recommend to the Secretary those programs that
should be designated as exemplary or promising. As its first major effort
under this legislation, the Department has established an Expert Panel on
Mathematics and Science Education to identify materials and programs in
this area, K-12. This summer the Department will field-test the process
that will be used nationally to identify programs.

SUMMER FIELD TEST
The following describes what we are asking people to do in participating in
the pilot phase of process. There will be a concentration on K-8
materials, particularly middle school materials.

The California site will focus on science materials and will be held in the
Palo Alto area. The dates are:

July 24 and 25 -- Training on understanding and applying the criteria of
the review process (on site).
July 28 -- Orientation to materials that will be reviewed in the pilot
phase (on site).
July 29, 30, 31 -- Review of materials (at home or otherwise off site).
August 1 -- half day meeting to review the process and get
recommendations for its improvement.

There will be a $1,000 honorarium for participating and completing the work.

HOW TO APPLY
If you are interested in participating in the Summer Field Test in the Palo
Alto area, please submit a letter of interest and resume. Please include
relevant information about your experience in science education and
especially any experience in reviewing K-8 science materials. Send
application as soon as possible to:
