CAN SPORT IMPROVE EDUCATION?
A Panel Discussion presented by the Exploratorium with
the American Sports Institute
October 18, 2pm

With good reason, many people believe that participating in sports takes
away from academic achievement for students. However, several
organizations are exploring ways in which sports can not only enhance
academic achievement but also play a significant role in improving
education generally. Bring your questions and views to share during a
special discussion at the Exploratorium's McBean Theater on October 18,
begining at 2pm. The four eminent panelists are: George Leonard, author
of Education and Ecstasy, The Ultimate Athlete, and Mastery, winner of 12
national awards for education writing, and a fourth degree black belt in
the Japanese martial art of Akido; Jack Hayes, Executive Director of the
California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for high school
sports throughout California; Jo Baker, Director of Academic Programs for
Student-Athletes at the University of California, Berkeley; and Joel
Kirsch, President of the American Sports Institute and director of the
Promoting Achievement in School through Sport (PASS) program. This panel
discussion is presented by the Exploratorium and the American Sports
Institute, and is offered in conjunction with the major exhibition SPORT!,
on view through January 4, 1998. The panel discussion is free with regular
admission to the Exploratorium.

WHAT MOTIVATES ATHLETES?
Featuring San Francisco Giants pitcher, Shawn Estes
Saturday, November 15, 2pm

Why do they do it? What drives a person to rise at ungodly hours to endure
punishing physical and mental conditioning, to restrict diet, regulate
sleep hours and deny herself many of the diversions most of us take for
granted? Why do athletes let themselves in for harsh criticism and
constant comparisons with team members and competitors. often for a single
moment of glory in competition? Questions such as these will be explored
at the Exploratorium's McBean Theater on November 15, beginning at 2pm in a
panel discussion featuring, among others, San Francisco Giants pitcher,
Shawn Estes.

Saturday,December 20
Sports Medicine
Featuring Dr. James Garrick, Director, Center for Sports Medicine, St.
Francis Memorial Hospital
Exploratorium's McBean Theater, 2 p.m.

The healing and preventative properties of medicine, as well as the field
of psychology and the science of mind and behavior have been known for
hundreds of years. But the specialized fields of sports medicine and sport
psychology are a more recent development. Is the care for athletes that
different from the general population? What can the general public learn
from the field of sports psychology? How do these two specialties
contribute to the well being of today's athletes? Other panelists, to be
announced.

SPORT! at the Exploratorium is sponsored by KRON and BayTV, KNBR 68, and
the San Francisco Chronicle.
