Subject: sublimation

Why do CO2 and I2 sublimate instead of going through a liquid phase (at
room pressure)? I know that you can make them liquify if you pressurize
them, but why wouldn't they always turn into liquids as the solid form was
heated? I've never heard an explanation of this.
