Subject: Salting water

Why do people salt water used for boiling pasta? Is this merely to impart
flavor to the pasta? Does it raise the boiling temperature and therefore
make the pasta cook more quickly? Does it prevent the pasta from sticking?

(I know this question is random, but it came up when we were talking in my
chem class about why adding salt to warm water will cause it to boil
suddenly.)
