the vinegar will also start rapid oxidation of the steel wool

try a piece of steel wool in a cup of vinegar for a couple days, hence best
rinse the steel wool in vinegar that day and rinse it-----then again the
water and oxygen will enhance the oxidation

Is there a steel wool material not coated with oils?
