use a scout trick, use flashlight batteries and copper connecting wires

you will end up with pellets of steel? and a great amout of flame and smoke

open windows will dispense with smoke, the fire is quite glowing and
impressive. try at home first and if the landlord does not evict you, you
will know what you are getting into.......smaller amounts of steel wool
better?
