Subject: Laser Diodes

Hello

I had an interesting afterthought to the LED
discussion: It came up during the discussion that
diodes are slightly ohmic, meaning that more voltage
gives you more current. Since laser pointers use
diodes to create light, I was wondering weather it is
possible to modulate the output intensity of a laser
pointer by modulating the input voltage. As an
experimentalist, I'm about to try to do this, but I
also wanted a bit of theory to go along with my
experiment.

Also, I tried to convince my students today that light
was a particle by explaining to them the outcomes of a
photoelectric effect experiment that Einstein
predicted. They wanted to "see" the results rather
than just hear about them (imagine that, students
wanted to actually see it!). Does anyone have any
sugestions for a photoelctric demo?
