Public Television Series "Evolution" Accepting Applications
for Lead Teacher Initiative
Deadline: June 1, 2001
The Evolution Project (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/), a new public television series and educational program co-produced by WGBH Boston and Clear Blue Sky Productions, seeks 25 educators for its Evolution Lead Teacher Initiative.
Selected by WGBH for their enthusiasm and ability to teach
evolution using multimedia resources, teachers participa-
ting in the initiative will reach out to colleagues in
their districts, states, and national educational organi-
zations to help them develop their knowledge of evolution
and improve their classroom teaching strategies. The
program will provide participating teachers with profes-
sional development courses and workshops, a $500 honorarium
and $1,000 grant, educational materials, and technical and
content support from WGBH. Teachers in the initiative will
be expected to complete professional development programs
and organize and lead teacher-training workshops.

ASM International Foundation's "Living in a Material World"
Offers $500 Grants for K-12 Teachers
Deadline: May 25, 2001
The ASM International Foundation
(http://www.asminternational.org/foundation), which works
to promote careers in the development or production of
metals, glasses, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers,
is offering ten grants of $500 each to help K-12 teachers
enhance their students' awareness of materials science
and the role of materials scientists in society.
Interested teachers should submit a proposal describing a
curriculum-based hands-on project that involves students'
observation, communication, and mathematics and science
skills while enhancing their awareness of the materials
around them. ASM International has local chapters across
North America whose members are willing to work closely
with local teachers to develop and implement lessons.
Proposals may be submitted electronically or by mail.
