Subject: - Learning Studio - week of June 3

This week I have decided to keep it simple and just do a couple of online
resources.

1.
Narrative of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year
1842, and to Oregon and North California in the Years 1843-44 (London:
Wiley and Putnam, 1846), by John Charles Fremont
Fremont is more than just a town in the South Bay. John Charles Fremont was
a math teacher turned engineer and army officer. As part of his duties he
worked on surveys in the western territories. In 1847 he played a part in
California seperating from Mexico, political conflicts over the government
of California resulted in his being convicted of mutiny, the sentence was
revoked by President Polk. He then worked surveying and looking for passes
to California before becoming a politician and settling in Los Angeles.

2.
The Mathemagician and the Pied Puzzler: A Collection in Tribute to Martin
Gardner, ed. by Elwyn Berklekamp and Tom Rodgers
Martin Gardner is better known than Fremont for his mathematical work as
well as the logic puzzles that have delighted readers for years.

Note:
The online books listed in these reports are freely available over the
Internet.
No passwords are required.

Almost all the online texts available through the Learning Studio catalog
can be located by doing a title keyword search for 'online resource'.

The current count of such resources is: 152

Some of these documents may be in PDF format and require the use of a free
reader.
