Subject: microwaving microbes

I don't know about the anthrax microbe, but if you
have ever put a Chinese take-out box (with the metal
bail) in a microwave you do get to see a very pretty
fire. With all of the metal fasteners, paper-clips,
staples, etc. I wouldn't want to be around the
microwave as it ignited the letters that had them. The
resulting fire would probably kill a lot of microbes
though. Other material commonly sent through the mail
is "ceremonial food", seeds, and plastic some of which
I think would not take kindly to the microwaves.

It is good thinking to be considering this, nobody
wants anthrax. Bottom line seems that we will have to
deal with why people attack others, rather than the
attacks themselves. While this is a much harder job,
human creativity and hatred will be impossible to
guard against if we fail to do this.

With firm handshake,
Raleigh
