1. The Universal History of Computing : From the Abacus to the Quantum
Computer / Georges Ifrah ; translated from the French, and with notes by
E.F. Harding, assisted by Sophie Wood ... [et al.].

Computing is not a process done just by plastic, glass and metal boxes on
our desks or big hunks of iron in air conditioned rooms. Computing has a
long history that also includes a variety of instruments and techniques.

This books covers much of that history.

2. The Difference Engine: Charles Babbage and the Quest to Build the First
Computer / Doron Swade.

Charles Babbage designed several complex mechanical computing engines
before his death, some so advanced that they could not be actually built
with the technology of his time. Eventually one of these, Difference Engine
no.2 was built in the late 1980s by a crew at the Science Museum in South
Kensington.

If you don't know what a difference engine is you probably should take a
look at this book. If you already know about these marvelous computing
machines you probably will be planning to read this book.
