This might serve as an idea for your earth science classes. The USGS has a site where they collect data about people's observations from an earthquake. The address is:

http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/STORE/X40133364/ciim_form.html

The questionnaire is an online form that asks for address and telephone, so it is not something I would suggest you have students submit without parent input. However, the questions from the form could be transcribed, and could serve as an interesting start of a discussion after an event like last night's temblor! Students do not have to have noticed the event in order to be able to fill out the questionnaire. Options are available for being asleep, not noticing it, no damage, etc. The site then quantifies your report and compares it to others in the area.

There is also a link to a map to see how others in the region have reported responses to the earthquake.

Happy shaking!

Ben
