Create a very cold liquid by putting dry ice into a container of
acetone. Lower the thermometer into the liquid as far as it will go.
The mercury/alcohol will contract all the way into the bulb
(hopefully) where the two parts will (hopefully) rejoin.

I've found that this works about 2/3 of the time in repairing thermometers.
