Bay Area Coordinator
for a School and Family Science Project
The Astronomical Society of the Pacific
(ASP) has a full-time position available for an
articulate, responsible person, with an interest
in K-12 and family education, to work with
Project ASTRO (a program that brings
professional and amateur astronomers into
4th through 9th grade classrooms.) The job
involves being the Coordinator of Bay Area
Project ASTRO, and being part of a team doing
Family ASTRO (a national program to bring
astronomy to families outside of school.)
Job responsibilities include recruiting
and selecting teachers, astronomers, and
educators from museums and community groups
for the project, coordinating an annual workshop
and follow-up activities, active fund-raising,
reporting to donors, maintaining a budget,
providing information by phone and e-mail,
and working with the project’s national staff in
recruiting, planning, and organizing for the
family initiative.
A background in astronomy is not
essential; applicants should have a bachelor’s
degree, a strong command of written and spoken
English, at least two years’ experience
working with educational programs, and familiarity
with computers (including e-mail, word processing,
and the web.) Some experience with or
interest in fund-raising is highly desirable.
The ASP is a pleasant, informal place to
work, especially as part of a team interested
in improving science education at many levels.
