Dave,
I'm pretty sure that it has to do with the solvent in
the dry erase pen resuspending the pigments from the
other marker, and the pigments having a greater
affinity for the material in the dry erase marker
(pigments, binders, etc) than for the board surface.
Using either the dry erase marker or a board cleaning
solvent to remove permanent markers which have been
mistaken for dry erase markers is something most of us
has had to do.

For alumni and staff who know me, things are going
well out here in the northern plains. Surviving high
humidity, heat, insects, and marriage. Looking
forward to being able to do low temperature
experiments by simply putting apparatus outside this
winter!
