Hey Eric,
A drop of detergent contains billions of molecules and to get a monomolecular
layer, the detergent has to spread out forever, even though the molecule has
nanometer dimensions. When I did this lab, I used a solution of 1.5 grams of
oleic acid per liter of n-hexane. This solution produces a film about 8 cm
across when a drop is added to water covered with powdered sulfur.
