Eric & Raleigh,

Was the demo mentioned by any chance commonly known as
the "Whoosh Bottle"? If so, was the warning given
regarding NEVER using the glass water bottles? I had
not heard of that demo until it was mentioned last
year in the AP Chemistry teachers' discussion "list".
This year when I moved to MN, one of the other science
teachers had done the demo for years using a glass
water bottle, and had it detonate during a demo. He
was fortunately not seriously injured, nor were his
students who were wearing their P.P.E. He had just
done the same demo the week before for a group of
Scouts who did not have any gear on! They were
digging glass shards out of the wall for quite some
time after the accident. For all running this demo,
even the plastic bottles should be replaced
periodically to avoid similar ruptures if the plastic
has become brittle. My understanding is that the
sound is not quite as impressive with the plastic
bottles, but the safety risk of the glass bottles is
simply unacceptable. It was formerly recommended to
tape over the glass bottles, and that would not be a
bad precaution with the plastic bottles either.

Have fun. Play safe.
