Any material that is uniform and whose components are chemically bound is
considered a pure substance. They may be atoms (helium), molecules
(nitrogen), or ionic compounds (sodium chloride). Alloys are uniform, but
their components are not chemically bound, hence brass is not a pure
substance (mixture of zinc and copper).
