Subject: solar system model

I have heard that somewhere there has been defined an activity of
building
a scale model of the solar system. I don't want to just build something
in the classroom, but to do it outside, like in the parking lot, with the
planets and the distance between them to actual scale, in order to have
the kids experience the vastness of space and the effect of gravity.

Does anyone have the details of how this could be done?
