I need to find some Freon for a gas law/avagadros law lab. Does
anyone know a good source here in the bay area for gasses? I tried
the auto parts store (air conditioner top off) but so far no luck.

Dear Marc:

You will have some serious problems finding Freon gas now that it is
blacklisted by the EPA for causing ozone layer depletion. Any good neon sign
shop will have items like argon, neon, or the rest of the noble gases (minus
radon of course). I would steer clear of "gas in a can" dust blasters
because they contain diflourethane which may not meet your specific need for
Freon. Why won't something like nitrogen work? If you want nitrogen, get
some liquid nitrogen and let it come back up to STP. Helium can be obtained
from a party stores where it is sold to inflate balloons. Any number of
gases can be found but Freon won't likely be one of them.

Automotive shops still using Freon for auto air conditioners have to have a
state and federal license so that is why they won't sell it outright to the
public any more. When you do find it on the black market smuggled in from
Mexico the price is around $100 per litre! The replacement for Freon that is
used in today's air conditioners is sold by stores like Kragens as part of a
recharge kit. It is not cheap either.

Hope this helps,

Al Sefl
Always full of hot air...
But safe for the ozone layer...
