Greetings Friends,
This is Tamar Cooper, Program Director for San Francisco Beautiful
and member of the San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance (SFGSA). On
behalf of the SFGSA I am proud to announce our mini-grants program.
The attached document is the grant application. We hope that this
program can be useful to your school or a school you are connected to.

Organizations that are directly involved with/related to a particular
publicly funded San Francisco school are eligible to apply. Examples
include school PTAs, School Site Councils, or an organized group of
teachers, parents and/or community members. Please pass this
application on to anyone you think may qualify.

Dear San Francisco schoolyard enthusiast,
Thank you for your support of green schoolyards in San Francisco. The San
Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance invites you to apply to its new
mini-grant program, made possible by the David B. Gold Foundation and the
Foundation for Ecology and Culture.

Components of SFGSA Mini -Grant Program: The mini-grant program will only
fund supplies/materials (example: soil, seeds, plants, related art
materials, gardening supplies and related construction materials) and
gardening tools that will be used to create or enhance an outdoor learning
environment at publicly funded San Francisco schools.

Mini-Grant Eligibility: Organizations that are directly involved
with/related to a particular publicly funded San Francisco school are
eligible to apply. Examples include school PTAs, School Site Councils, or
an organized group of teachers, parents and/or community members. Priority
will be given to those who attended the SFGSA's Growing Greener School
Grounds Conference. Individual applicants will not be considered.

Average amount granted: $300-$600

Application Deadline: The application must be received by Thursday, April
3, 2003.

In addition to filling out this grant application, the following documents
are required and must be submitted with the application:
                     1) Letter of support from your school principal.

2) Letters of support from at least 2-3 teachers at your school, who will
commit to using the proposed project during class time, play time or after
school (depending on the nature of the project) and commit to engaging
students in the creation of the proposed project. Please note that members
of the applicant organization may submit letters of support.

3) A document stating the in-kind/financial support or volunteer time that
will be committed to the project.

4) A long term maintenance plan for the proposed project (summer
maintenance, long term plans for sustainability).

5) A designated "point person" as well as a secondary contact. The point
person will be responsible for proper expenditure of funds as well as
producing a timely follow-up report.

6) A timeline for planning, construction, completion and maintenance of the
proposed project. (We assume that most projects will be undertaken in Fall
2003.)

7) A Project Budget that includes:
    a) The total cost of the project
    b) How the mini-grant money will be used.
    c) In-kind services the project will benefit from (including volunteer
time, donated supplies or
        expertise etcŠ)*
    d) Any other resources that will make this project successful
(additional funders, etcŠ)

8) Aerial photograph, plan view map, or other illustration of the school
that locates the proposed
    project site (A simple drawing will be sufficient if formal maps are
not available).

9) Current photographs of the site where you plan to build/create your
proposed project.

10) Illustrations of the proposed project (if possible).

Mini-Grant recipients will be expected to provide follow-up information
once the grant has been implemented including:
1) Photographs of completed project.
2) Original receipts to account for all expenditures.
3) A scheduled follow-up visit by San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance
Members
4) A completed follow-up questionnaire and brief summary report.

* Please assume that 1 Volunteer hour = $10.50
