I'm not really sure it would meet your criteria, but phosphorescence is an
interesting topic. And there is also bioluminescence (algae, fireflies,
etc.), which is fascinating! Carolina Biological sells a Bioluminescent
Bacterium Kit for $15, which involves samples of Vibrio fischeri, a common
glow-in-the-dark ocean-dweller.
