Subject: Skydive from the Stratosphere


On August 16, 1960, Joe Kittinger rode a helium balloon 19 and a half
miles above the Earth's surface, and leapt out into the near vacuum of the
stratosphere. Almost 14 minutes later he landed on solid ground.

Unfortunately, I am old enough to vaguely remember this happening. The
feat has never been successfully duplicated. (It has been attempted -
guess what happened.)

The link below is an interactive reenactment of Kittinger's
record-breaking jump. Have fun trying to figure out how you can deploy a
set of parachutes when falling from this altitude!
