Subject: 2 day math workshop at RAFT

Hello Pinhole Friends,
With summer just arriving, you may not be thinking about professional
development right now....
I encourage you to take note of this workshop for 4th - 8th grade teachers
taught by Tsing Bardin and Mary Laycock. Mary is one of my math heros, and
now, at 87, she moves more slowly, but her mind for math is as sharp as
ever. Mary was a pioneer in hands-on mathematics education, and she has
taught math for over 60 years.
Also, if you haven't been to RAFT in a while, you have another good reason
to go...they now have a special room (the Green Room) where they stock
their most popular items.
Read on for the workshop details.
Waves,
Lori

On June 24th and 25th, come to RAFT in San Jose for a 2-day "Hands-On Math
Institute" for 4th - 8th grade teachers taught by Tsing Bardin and Mary
Laycock.

On the first day, get to the nuts and bolts of teaching concepts of
multiplication and division in a concrete way.
Learn how to apply these same powerful and intuitive approaches to geometry
and to solving word problems. Activities in measurements and estimates will
follow in the afternoon. In the second day, continue using these hands-on
methods as they apply to fractions, decimals and percents. Activities in
number sequences, functions and visual thinking will be integrated into the
arithmetic operations. All the materials presented are in accordance with
the California State Standards and can be used readily in the classroom.
Mary Laycock will join Tsing Bardin on the second day.
