Hi Yibsmith,
Acetylene (ethyne) has a tendency to polymerize if the gas pressure get too
high. This process is very exothermic and will occur rapidly enough to cause an
explosion, hence all the precautions about storing and handling this very
reactive gas. By the way, during WW2, a German chemist named Reppe used readily
available acetylene to make almost everything including drugs, gasoline,
rubber, cloth, etc.
