Subject: How is magnetic force carried?

OK here is a physics question from a biologist! I was thinking about
how light is composed of photons. That is that the light we see (and
any electromagnetic radiation, I believe) travels from one place to
another as photons. What about magnetism? How is magnetic force
transferred from place to place? Also, EM radiation can travel quite
far. Can magnetic force also be transferred over great distances?

Thanks!

Steve
