Subject: pinhole: SCIENCE CONFERENCE IN LONG BEACH

Dear Science Colleagues:

Just wanted to give you all a quick note about some of the offerings at the
upcoming California Science Educators Conference in Long Beach from October 9th
- 12th.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Jane Goodall and her presentation will be on
Friday morning, October 10th. I have heard her speak several times before,
including once with my Roots & Shoots Club members. (Roots & Shoots Clubs were
initiated by Dr. Goodall to help students around the world make a difference for the
world's environment, one person at a time.) She is a wonderful speaker and her
message is one I would want all educators to hear. It is powerful,
educational, and uplifting.

A great way to start the Conference would be to attend the Pre-Conference Day
activities scheduled for October 9. This pre-conference day offers an
excellent opportunity to experience a "Lesson Study". This workshop will provide
attendees with the opportunity to observe a Lesson Study team as they plan, teach
and de-brief

a lesson. The team from El Centro, along with Superintendent Michael

Klentschy and Olga Amaral, will present the principles of Lesson Study, will

re-enact the planning and de-briefing of a lesson, show the video of the

lesson in its first, second and third iterations and, share student

artifacts. The implications for achievement will be presented and the

workshop will conclude with a time for questions and comments.

Please note that the deadline for pre-conference registration is September

24th.

There will be hundreds of great workshops to choose from throughout the four
days and the Exhibit Hall will be filled with wonderful ideas to stir your
creative juices for the classroom. As always, professional development hours of
credit or optional university credit hours will be available for conference
attendees. (college credit hours require a nominal fee.)

You can find out more about the conference by visiting YOUR CALIFORNIA
SCIENCE EDUCATOR'S WEBSITE, THE CSTA WEBSITE, AT www.cascience.org and navigate to
the conference area.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the conference and hope that the new
school year has begun with a great start.

Take care,
Sue Pritchard
CSTA, Middle/Jr. High School Director
