The "Magic School Bus" series by Scholastic is quite good...my first grader
absolutely loves them, and wants them read over and over (and over!) - and
then he "reads" them himself (with some comprehension). There is quite a
bit of poetic license and some factual errors, but the author even goes to
the trouble of identifying (most) of the errors and impossible/improbable
situations within the story at the end of the book. The books in the
classic series have lots of "side notes" which make them difficult to read
out loud, but great for maybe a 3rd/4th grade reading level (a guess). In
the "classic" series of books, there is one called Inside the Earth, and
another Inside a Hurricane, and one called On the Ocean Floor. The TV
series of books (there's a cartoon series on TLC) is a "dumbed-down" series
(less side notes), but it has titles on Heat, Volcanoes, Deserts, Water
Cycle, Animal food chains, Ants, Photosynthesis, Salmon Migration and Coral
Reefs. I tried to pick titles from the list that are related to your list
of topics above - some might not be appropriate. There is a web site:
 http://www.scholastic.com/magicschoolbus/home.htm
so you could check it out as well.
