Subject: Stun gun / taser

At a recent party, I was talking with an acquaintance that is a Sheriff,
and I became interested in the physics of a stun gun or a taser. From the
web, I have been able to determine that a stun gun generates a charge from
two 9-V batteries of up to 200,000 Volts and about 3 milliamps.
Apparently an oscillator varies the voltage in such a way that it
interferes with body and brain functioning. I would be interested to know
how this charge compares with, say, a Van de Graff generator or the charge
of a disposable flas camera.

Does anyone know any additional details, like the period of this
oscillation, how it interferes with the nervous system, etc.? I would
also be interested to know the electrical details of how a taser shoots
some electrically charged barbs to enable distance operation.

BTW, if you are concerned about "personal safety", it appears that anyone
with a valid credit card can order one of these babies off the web for a
mere $29.95.

Thanks,

Bill
