Aloha Geoff,
I have used the reusable hand warmers that have a small disk in them that
when snapped triggers the crystals to come out of solution and release
heat.... (the hand warmer part) They can be gently boiled to reuse after
they return to home temperature... takes several hours to boil and cool
slowly.... too quick and they recrystalize. They substance which they use
is sodium acetate. They are listed on several websites as "instant hand
warmers." some of the sites include an explanation.

Cheers,

Honolulu (where we rarely need hand warmers)

Does anyone have an interesting, short lab about supersaturation to do
in a 1st year chemistry class?

Thanks,
Geoff
