Hi Geoff,
Metallic bonds are quite different from ionic bonds. Metals have free moving
electrons that ions do not have. I have never heard of "gluing" two metal
pieces together by simply pressing them firmly. If this phenomenon is so, then the
difference in bonding might account for it.
