 Hi Mike:

First you must take the decorative coating off the can by scrubbing with steel wool so the shiny Al is exposed. Do not scrub off the bottom or the top, just the cylindircal sides. Now, open and drink your soda or save for later. Fill your can with water. Place in an 800 ml beaker with 1 M NaOH solution (40 g Red Devil Lye/liter). The can should hang by threading a pencil through tab and support pencil on sides of beaker. Be sure that the bottom of the can clears the bottom of the beaker (not touching). Let stand overnight. I suggest making 2 in case one breaks when you are looking at them throughout the day.
