Environmental Education Specialist
Full time (40 hours/week, includes weekends)
Term position, beginning Summer 2004 ending June 30, 2005, with an opportunity to extend 1 year
Salary: $31,000 - $33,000 (depending on experience and available funding)

Job Description and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be an employee of the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society, working under the supervision of the staff at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Environmental Education Center (EEC) in the Alviso District of San Jose, California. The Environmental Education Specialist employee's main duties include: developing, conducting, and evaluating environmental education activities and programs, especially those addressing personal water use; and staffing the EEC Sunday through Thursday. Specific responsibilities include:
coordinating and conducting field trips and classroom presentations for Elementary, Middle, and High School students;
conducting teacher workshops; writing curriculum;
presenting interpretive programs for diverse audiences;
conducting tours at both the EEC and San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant;
conducting visitor surveys and writing reports.
        
Approximately 20% of the job is performed outdoors; most of the remaining time is spent in an office setting. Working evenings and Saturdays as well as local travel will be required on an occasional basis. Hiking/walking is required while leading tours and conducting programs. Lifting heavy objects (approximately 50 lbs), such as boxes and tables, is sometimes required.

Qualifications:
Applicants must possess basic management skills including leadership, creative problem solving and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; a BachelorÆs degree in environmental studies, environmental education, physical or natural science, or equivalent; substantial knowledge of interpretive and/ or environmental education principles and techniques; a solid understanding of the general principles of ecology; the ability to effectively organize and monitor a series of concurrent activities; the ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing; and a valid California driverÆs license. It is required to have a car to drive to local schools. Reimbursement for mileage is provided.
        
Knowledge Desired:
It is desirable for the applicant to possess knowledge of salt marsh ecology, and San Francisco Bay natural history, flora, and fauna; the ability to read, write, and speak Spanish; experience with a variety of word processing programs, and desk top publishing; a teaching credential and/or practical experience in education, or education related field.
