Kelly, Your plan sounds workable. I used a similar strategy, but the
unit was held together by a master chart.
The chart included the basics-digestion,reproduction, locomotion, etc,
etc, which the students filled in as we went through the phylla. All
was reinforced with Attenborough's Life on Earth videos. The test on
the unit consisted in part of the same chart, with a few empty spaces in
each column/row. I had fun including Far Side cartoons along with each
