TEACHER II
Center for Public Exhibition/Visitor Experiences department
Fixed-term, part-time position

SUMMARY:
*The Group Inquiry by Visitors with Exhibits (GIVE) project is a
research project to create and test different methods for helping
museum visitors develop, practice and apply general inquiry skills.
Visitors the project will target include casual Exploratorium
visitors and low-income families. The Teacher is responsible for
co-developing and leading mediated visitor experiences that focus
either on inquiry skills or on informational content. During the
project design phase, the Teacher will work closely with the project
team to create, evaluate and refine the mediated visitor experiences.
During the data collection phase of the project, the Teacher will
facilitate experiences for visitor groups and work with other project
staff to assess the learning that results. This position reports to
the Public Programs Manager in the Center for Public Exhibition.

* ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Co-develop inquiry-based and content-based educational materials
and mediated visitor experiences
· Make regular presentations to visitor groups and facilitate
different kinds of group learning at Exploratorium exhibits, as
determined by project research design
· Participate in literature review of educational research
· Assist in making and implementing experimental design decisions
· Contribute to project documentation
· Additional duties as assigned

*QUALIFICATIONS:
· A BA degree in science with 45 additional credits or combination of
degree and equivalent and relevant experience
· Minimum of five years teaching experience
· Working knowledge of inquiry-based approaches to teaching and
learning in science
· Ability to communicate scientific concepts to adults, children, and
to diverse audiences verbally and in writing
· Demonstrated experience in developing educational materials and /
or mediated visitor experiences
· Ability to work collaboratively as well as take a leadership role
· Available to work at least one weekend day per week
· Interest in cognitive research in the domain of teaching and
learning of science preferred
· Proficiency in spoken Spanish and/or Cantonese highly desirable
· Able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds short distances; utilize
general office equipment including a computer terminal; can move from
place to place

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

HOW TO APPLY:
This is a fixed-term, part-time (22.5 hours per week), exempt, union
position (grade 2P, step 1) that pays $481.28 per week and includes
benefits. This fixed-term position starts on February 1, 2005 and is
to end on or before February 1, 2007.
