Any iron oxide should work, after all, Fe3O4 is just Fe(FeO2)2. The first Fe 
has +2 oxidation number and the other Fe's have +3 oxidation numbers. Once the 
rection starts the Al will reduce any iron oxide to iron. Fe2O3 is usually 
used because it is just common rust and is very cheap.
