Hi Damon -- You've already had several responses, but here's another one --
91% isopropyl alcohol. It's commonly available at drug stores, and sometimes in
large markets like Safeway or Albertson's. I've done a 5-layer density column
using (in order of decreasing density), water-- canola oil -- 60% isopropyl
alcohol (diluted from 70%, which is off an off-the-shelf product) -- mineral
oil -- 91% isopropyl alcohol (also an off-the-shelf product). Common food
coloring will dissolve in the water and the alcohols. The 91% isopropyl is the least
dense of the bunch, so is the best candidate for showing the difference in
buoyancy compared to water. Good luck! -- Don
