Subject: A great opportunity

We recently mailed out an announcement about the upcoming Informal Science
Educators Case Initiative: A Special Two-Day Institute of Professional
Development for the Professional Developer. (it was on orange paper)

We have been working for a year with a group of SEABA members to develop a
set of cases that are situated in the work that you and your colleagues do
in the field of science education. This institute was designed to fill a
void (the absence of professional development opportunities designed
specifically for people who coordinate programs, do workshops, work with
volunteers and teachers to create curriculum, work with scientists to
augment k-12 science programs, etc.) and to provide the type of forum where
members of SEABA can come together to network and learn from each other.

I hope that you might consider participating yourself and that you will
circulate the announcement to others with whom you work. Should we have
more interest than we can accommodate at this first Institute we will
definitely schedule another.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me at 415/241-1703
or send an email.

(the text of the flyer appears below as a reminder)
========================================================
In the past decade, teacher educators and staff developers have paid
increasing attention to the "case idea" as a way to reform the preparation
and professional development of teachers and administrators. This
initiative expands that work to include informal science educators and the
scientists and volunteers with whom they work.

Nine case narratives have been written by science educators from
SEABA-member organizations. The authors describe real experiences that
they found to be upsetting, disturbing, or surprising. The facilitated
discussions provide for exploration of complex, messy, and often delicate
issues for which simple answers do not exist. These discussions allow
participants to examine their own practices by engaging in dialogue with
others who may have different points of view.

Join us for a powerful professional development experience designed for
those engaged in providing professional development for others:
*discover the power of cases as a professional development tool
*participate in case discussions pertinent to your own work
*learn techniques for facilitating meaningful case discussions
