Subject: Physics Projects

Dear physics teachers,
I'm interested in having my physics students do some kind
of long-term independent project this semester -- building
something which will demonstrate a physics principle, or
designing an experiment; more in-depth than
shorter-term projects like the mousetrap car. (I must admit
that part of my motivation in this exercise is that I hope
I may get the students to build some of the demos I never
have time to build!)
I'm wondering if any physics teachers out there have any
experience with this and suggestions on
* how to structure it (how to define the assignment,
time frame, what guidance to
give, how to monitor progress, etc.)
* sources of ideas for projects

Thanks in advance for your ideas!
