Here is a message I received from ISEN-ASTC-L (the Informal Science
Educators' Network --- Association of Science-Technology Centers listserv)
that I thought might be of interest to all of you.

Their web page is basic but informative. These would be great people to
contact to model after.

The Supporting Teachers: Science Education Network (or Science Education
Network or SEN) began last summer in El Paso, Texas. It is designed to
create a support system for science educators in the area. We try to meet
once a month. The reasons for the meetings are several: we try to have
some sort of an activity or lesson plan that will engage students and can
be used in the classroom immediately -- this is used as a draw for the
teachers. But we also try to get discussion so that teachers can share
problems, strategies, etc. We want both experienced and novice teachers.
We are also using this as an information exchange -- for instance, if we
have opportunities for conventions, grants, free supplies, etc., this is
where we share that info.

We have a web page that gives some of the details at
http://www.utep.edu/~region19/supteach/sen.htm -- and it has some links to
the supporting groups, etc. We are having some difficulty getting this
really going. We're going to try really doing a mass faxing to the
schools, principals, and science teachers before next month's meeting --
and we'll try to make it particularly good, so that hopefully, we'll be
able to attract and hold some new people. I think once it gets going and
there is a lot of participation (and thus sharing of ideas, info, etc),
teachers will see the use of it and try to attend, even though they are,
I'm sure, tired after a full day at school.

I would welcome any ideas or suggestions on things we should include here
or ways to attract more people or improve our program. Thanks for asking,
Alice.
