REQUEST FOR PARTICIPATION
-----
SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning is looking for 3-4
San Francisco Bay Area teachers to participate in a research project
designed to understand and develop technology to support collaborative
professional development activities among small groups of teachers.

The selected teachers will attend the 1997 Beloit College/Howard Hughes
Medical Institute (HHMI) Summer Workshop for Middle School and High
School Teachers in Science sponsored by the BioQUEST Curriculum
Consortium (http://www.beloit.edu/~bquest). The workshop, entitled
"Heredity, Health, and Humanity" will be held July 7-18, 1997, at Beloit
College in Beloit, Wisconsin. Participants will be "exploring new
findings in genetics, ethical issues, and learner-centered, problem
solving approaches to teach genetics in the classroom."

Beloit College/HHMI provides 4 semester hours of graduate credit upon
successful completion of the workshop. THe Bioquest Consortium pays for
tuition and room and board for the 12 days, and provides a free copy of
the BioQUEST Library of computer-based tools, simulations, and textual
materials for personal use. SRI will pay up to $500 for air fare to/from
the workshop for the 3-4 Bay Area teachers selected.

SRI researchers will attend the worshop along with the teachers to
observe and record the teachers working together. When the teachers
return home, they MUST also commit to continuing to work together to
complete and implement a project started at the workshop. This will
involve meeting as a group at SRI at least 3 times in August (stipends
and local travel costs will be paid by SRI) and conducting two follow-up
activities (with other teachers or students) at their school during the
upcoming school year. The teachers must agree to allow SRI staff to
videotape workshop activities and group meetings, conduct individual and
group interviews, collect project-related email, materials, and other
documents. The data will be used FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY.

APPLICATIONS are due at Beloit College by MAY 1, 1997, and include
- a letter of application
- a resume
- the names and telephone numbers of three references

Please contact Mark Schlager (schlager@sri.com) or Patricia Schank
(schank@sri.com) ASAP for an application if you are interested.

** Note that any teacher may apply for the workshop without participating
in the research. Air fare is only paid for those participating in the
research. **
